D.A. Points parlayed a seven-under par 65 on Friday to grab a share of the lead at the midway point of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.
The 33-year-old started his second round on the 10th hole of the South course at Torrey Pines and rolled in a seven-footer for a birdie on his final green of the day. Points made up 15 spots Friday and is seeking his first PGA Tour victory to go with his four wins on the Nationwide circuit.
Tied atop the leaderboard with Points is Ryudi Imada, who shot a 68 on the South course to improve from Thursday’s second-place standing. Imada opened his round with a birdie three on the par-four first hole and played a bogey-free round.
First-round leader Scott Piercy fell 20 spots with a three-over par 75 on the South course. Teeing off from 10, Piercy struggled through his first nine, taking three bogeys in a four-hole stretch. On his second nine, Piercy carded a six on the par-four fourth hole, but responded two holes later with an eagle three.
Michael Sim climbed 104 slots with a blistering 62 on the North course for the day’s low round. Sim’s scoring binge of nine birdies and an eagle forged his way to a tie for third with Matt Every.
Pre-tournament favorite Phil Mickelson fired a 67 on the North course to jump 10 spots into a five-way tie for 10th. Defending champion Nick Watney improved by a stroke with a two-under par 70 on the South and he’s safely into the weekend at three-under.
John Daly shot 79, 71 and missed the cut for the second time in as many tournaments to start his year.
